Years 1 & 2

Years 1 & 2 are referred to as “Key Stage 1”; this reflects their stage in the National Curriculum.  The National Curriculum comprises the “core subjects” of English, Maths and Science, together with the “foundation” subjects of Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music and PE.  Religious Education is taught in line with the Oxfordshire Schools’ Agreed Syllabus.

We have prepared plans for each subject and, using these, we have constructed a curriculum framework which covers all that your child should be taught during the primary years. This framework broadly consists of two-year cycles for each subject.

Your child’s academic progress will be informally assessed by his or her teacher on an ongoing basis.  In Year 1 there is a “Phonics Screening” test and in Year 2 children are tested in Maths and English.  Our aim is to make these tests as low-key as possible for the children; you will be given more information in the Spring term, before the tests are taken.

In Key Stage 1, our Phonics planning is based on ‘Letters and Sounds’ publications. In terms of reading books, we have a selection from different reading schemes; these include Oxford Reading Tree, Oxford Reading Tree Phonics, Songbirds Phonics, Collins Big Cat.

During their time at the school pupils will take part in a far broader curriculum than the list above. Opportunities offered may include educational trips and visits including residential trips, theatre trips, sports and music events, class assemblies, visiting speakers and extra-curricular activities, to name just a few.

If you would like further information about the curriculum at Long Furlong, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or the office staff.  You can also find a useful summary of what should be taught below.
