Physical Education

We encourage young people to be motivated to adopt a healthy lifestyle and foster positive values such as fairness and respect towards others. The school believes that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, makes a vital and unique contribution to a pupil’s physical development, emotional health, and overall well-being.

Intent

We aspire to provide every child with access to a wide variety of sports, with further opportunity to participate in competitive and non-competitive sporting experiences. PE at our school aims to support children’s health and fitness, while enabling them to develop their own physical confidence. We recognise the positive impact of physical activity on mental health, productivity and motivation which is why we prioritise high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in PE.

Our curriculum intention is to enable all children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of physical education; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times to achieve their potential.

Implementation

The PE curriculum is taught in-line with the National Curriculum, and is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE.

Each child receives two lessons of PE each week, which are carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities are covered. These lessons are taught by class teachers. Within each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more.

We emphasise the importance of inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. Therefore, we aim to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities outside of competitive sports. All children have access to the P.E. curriculum through activities, resources and equipment being tailored appropriately for children with SEND. Children learn through similar activities, with final outcomes modified to suit all needs.

In addition to the non-competitive opportunities, children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area such as athletics,  football, cross country, rounders and tag rugby tournaments. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
