Our curriculum goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum, offering enrichment experiences and opportunities during and after the school day. A key emphasis is placed on raising aspirations, fostering personal pride in achievements, and ensuring learning is purposeful and meaningful. These opportunities include:

Promoting Positive Mental Health & Wellbeing

We are committed to supporting the positive mental health and wellbeing of every member of our school community, recognizing its equal importance to physical health in shaping our lives. We understand that children’s mental health and overall wellbeing significantly impact their learning and achievement.

Our role in school is to ensure children are equipped to navigate times of change and stress while being supported to reach their full potential or access help when needed. We also aim to teach children how to maintain positive mental health, understand factors that influence it, reduce the stigma around mental health issues, and seek support when necessary.

Positive wellbeing is woven throughout the curriculum and all school activities. Through a well-structured PSHE, RSE, and Citizenship program, our children gain the knowledge, skills, and understanding to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and become resilient, informed, and responsible citizens

Emotional Literacy Support. Children facing challenges such as domestic violence, bereavement, anxiety, or other experiences impacting their emotional well-being are identified and supported by a fully trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA). The ELSA provides regular one-to-one or small group nurture sessions tailored to the child’s needs. Our school prioritizes the individual needs of each pupil, ensuring their development and learning are understood and supported holistically.

Clubs play a vital role in supporting children’s social and emotional development and overall well-being, while broadening their range of experiences to help them make informed choices for adult life. These activities are designed to be enjoyable and cater to a diverse array of interests. Some examples of the clubs that run throughout the year are Maypole, Sports clubs, Gardening club, chess club, guitar and coding club.

Healthy eating is promoted throughout the school. We have children’s garden areas for children to grow vegetables. The children grow a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs and when harvested use these in cooking activities.

Whole school theme days and weeks

Throughout the year, themed days/weeks are woven into the curriculum to extend and enhance the breadth and balance of opportunities we offer our children. These include, Art Week, Science week, Bikeability, World Book Day, Black History Month, Sports day and much more. 

Forest School & Outdoor Learning

Our school is fortunate to have its own woodland area and a teacher trained to deliver the Forest Schools program.

Sessions are tailored to the needs of the group, ensuring they are learner-led. Each activity is designed to develop practical, intellectual, and both intra- and interpersonal skills.

Eco school

We are an Eco school and know it is important for our children to be engaged in environmental issues. An elected Eco council are supporting the school to achieve Green Flag status to acknowledge our work in educating our children about the need to be active to support the environment.

Educational Visits and Residentials

School trips and visits are an essential part of the school year, offering invaluable opportunities for our children and reflecting the dedication of staff and supporting adults. These outings range from class trips designed to bring learning to life through first-hand experiences, to extra-curricular activities such as choir, orchestra, and sporting events, as well as participation in performances or competitions.

Children in Years 4, 5, and 6 also take part in residential visits, which are carefully planned to provide new, exciting, and enriching experiences.

Visitors into School & Workshops

Visitors play a vital role in enriching various aspects of school life and work. They lead talks, workshops, and full-day activities across a wide range of subjects, offering children access to external expertise and experiences. By connecting the school with the wider community, visitors provide opportunities for children to engage with artists, musicians, authors, healthcare professionals and others.

Music, Art & Drama

Children have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of musical activities and performances, where they are encouraged to sing, compose, and explore creative expression through sound. Through active listening, children develop their awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diverse musical styles.

We also value the role of drama in our curriculum, recognising its positive impact on children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Drama is integrated throughout the school in various ways, including storytelling, performances, and assemblies.

In Year 4, children are offered free lessons to learn string instruments, with the option to continue these lessons on a paid basis in Years 5 and 6.

School council & leadership opportunities

Each class elects members of the school council who raise issues about the school and support events that interest them, such as fundraising for charitable groups. Older children can apply and be interviewed for positions such as librarians and lunch time monitors.

Charitable activities

Children actively participate in charity work and fundraising for a variety of local, national, and international causes. Annual events such as Children in Need, Comic Relief, and Sport Relief are key highlights. Additionally, pupils often bring their own ideas to teachers to raise funds, particularly in response to global issues.
