Governor roles and responsibilities

The governing body has three core functions, as defined by the Department for Education. Those are to ensure:

  • that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined;
  • that the headteacher performs their responsibilities for the educational performance of the school; and
  • the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.

At Long Furlong, we also believe in a fourth core function, which is to ensure effective engagement with everyone in the school community.

It is important to note that there is a clear delineation between the roles of the governing body and the Headteacher. The governing body provides strategic direction and accountability, while the Headteacher is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school. A good way to think of it is that governors have an “Eyes on, Hands off” role in the running of the school.

Governors also have several other important duties. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Determining how the school’s budget is spent
  • The appointing and dismissing of staff, including the Headteacher
  • Hearing appeals and grievances
  • Promoting high standards of teaching, learning and achievement
  • Setting and monitoring the school’s policies and procedures
